Position Summary
The Assistant General Manager (AGM) supports daily business operations across both retail and kitchen environments. This role bridges front-of-house, back-of-house, and administrative coordination to ensure consistent execution, strong team accountability, and smooth day-to-day operations.This is a hands-on leadership role in a small-format space where organization, clarity, and follow-through are essential.
You will be joining our team prior to our opening, working our General Manager to:
Support in building grocery SOPs (opening/closing, food safety, prep, service flow)
Ensure compliance with ServSafe and local health department standards
Support daily service execution in a compact, high-efficiency environment
Train and supervise grocery staff under the General Manager and Workforce Director
Model professionalism, accountability, and calm leadership under pressure
Create a culture rooted in standards, structure, and mentorship
Join a dynamic team in a start-up based culture, taking on roles to execute a vision for a
Key Responsibilities
Daily Operations
Support overall daily store operations (retail + prep kitchen coordination)
Assist with opening and closing procedures across departments
Ensure policies, workflows, and service standards are consistently followed
Monitor cleanliness, safety, and presentation of the entire space
Support inventory coordination and purchasing between retail and kitchen teams
Support payroll, admin, and compliance standards with the General Manager.
Team Leadership & Accountability
Supervise hourly staff during shifts
Reinforce operational expectations and performance standards
Support scheduling coordination and shift coverage as needed
Assist in onboarding and training of new team members
Address minor operational issues in real time and escalate when appropriate
Administrative & Systems Support
Support documentation, compliance tracking, and operational checklists
Ensure temperature logs, sanitation logs, and required reporting are completed
Partner with the GM and leadership team to maintain alignment between culinary and retail operations
Help prepare for inspections, audits, or internal reviews
Support with payroll and timesheets
Maintain inventory standards and cleanliness.
Provide an exceptional customer experience
Qualifications
Required
3+ years of supervisory experience in retail, food service, grocery, or fast-casual environments
Experience managing shifts and enforcing operational standards
Strong organizational and communication skills
Ability to work in a small, fast-paced, high-efficiency space
Comfort with hands-on leadership (not office-based management)
Preferred
Experience in mission-driven or community-centered organizations
Experience working in environments with workforce training or entry-level staff
ServSafe certification (or willingness to obtain)
Compensation & Benefits
Full-time, hourly position
Competitive hourly rate at $25/hr

The Assistant Kitchen Manager supports the CDC in executing daily kitchen operations, maintaining food safety standards, supervising staff, and ensuring smooth opening and closing procedures. This role is hands-on and operationally focused, ideal for someone with strong quick-service or fast-casual food experience who understands systems, standards, and team accountability.This is not a chef-driven role; it is a food operations-forward leadership role.

Join our 50-week paid apprenticeship program and learn real skills while serving your neighbors. You'll gain hands-on training in retail operations, kitchen techniques, and food preparation at The Community Grocer, a nonprofit making eating well easier for everyone.
What you'll get:
$15 to $16.50 per hour (starting at $15, with raises as you progress)
40 hours per week of paid on the job training
Nationally recognized credentials (ServSafe, DOL Line Cook Apprenticeship)
Three phases of learning: Retail Operations → Quantitative Cooking → Community Kitchen
Real experience running a grocery store and kitchen that serves your community
